Kayak coaching session on the Salza River in Styria, Austria

Salza

Grade II-III+ | Austria

About the Salza

The Salza is a proper Austrian classic. It just keeps going, rapid after rapid, winding through forest with barely a flat section in sight. The Grade II-III water is relentless enough to build real stamina, and the occasional III+ section keeps you honest. If your ferry glide or eddy catch is sloppy, the Salza will let you know. That's exactly what makes it such a good coaching river.

Highlights

  • Continuous whitewater that builds proper river fitness
  • Sustained Grade II-III with the odd III+ to keep things spicy
  • Runs through thick alpine forest the whole way
  • Paddleable from March right through to November
  • Great for drilling ferry glides and eddy turns

Best For

Beginner to intermediate paddlers who want to build stamina on continuous whitewater.
